Abstract:

A sinopsis of cave dwelling fauna of Julian Alps (province
of Udine) is reported herein. The report is based on
literature citations as well as on original data. 33 species
(19 terrestrial and 14 aquatic) are identified; they were
collected in 25 sites (20 caves and karstic sinkholes, 1
artificial gallery, and 4 karstic springs). Twelve species
are troglobiont. Excluding some taxonomic groups reported
maily at generic level or not yet identified (nematods,
oligochaetes, ostracods, dipterans), the ecology and
distribution of troglophiles, troglobionts as well as most
common trogloxenes is reported. Notwithstanding the
presence of six species endemic to the Massif of Canin,
the paper reveals several gaps in our knowledge of the
subterranean fauna of the Julian Alps.
